As the September 19, 2020 date for the Edo gubernatorial election draws near, Esan South East Local Government of Edo State was agog on August 18 and 19 when the campaign train of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) governorship candidate, Governor, Godwin Obaseki and Deputy Governor Philip Shuibu arrived the ancient  town of Ubiaja.

Ubiaja was the Headquarters of Ishan Division which includes the five local governments of Auchi, Afenanor and Kukuruku Kingdom now known as Edo Central and Edo North.

The Governor and his train landed to harvest decampees from Esan towns that make up the Esan South East Local Government Area of the state. They includes: Ilushi, Oria, Ugboha, Ubiaja, Ewatto, Ewohimi, Ohorduo and Emu.

These decampees are leaving the fast drowning, sinking and clueless All Progressive Congress (APC).

To the people of these towns the visit of Obaseki was a home coming for him as he grew up in Ubiaja.

The people were so excited to receive the governor and his train that they told the governor to campaign elsewhere, as he has already won in Esan South East.

According to them, “Don’t waste your time here, our great son. We are all for you.”

In Ubiaja, the headquarter of the Local Government; over 500 members of APC decamped to PDP.

Honourable Bobby Palmer, who led decampees to the APC, said their decision to dump the APC and join the PDP was that they believe that the continuation of Governor Obaseki/Shuibu team for another four years would facilitate more development projects to Esan land in particular and Edo state in general in view of his the team’s great achievements in their first four years.

Speaking further, the APC Chieftain commended the governor for prioritizing the welfare and well-being of Edo people against the interest of the few selfish politicians.

He stated that Obaseki’s re-election would ensure continuity of his sterling performance and consolidation on good governance in the state.

In Ewohimi, one of the largest towns in Esan South East Local Government Area, the reception was tumultuous, as PDP supporters came out enmass to welcome to the governor.

Speaking during the campaign to Ewohimi, Barrister Ken Immasuagbon, popularly known as Rice man mobilised the men, women and youths to the campaign ground to show solidarity with the governor.

Speaking at the venue of the rally, the Ewohimi born politician assured the governor that the Ewohimi people were very proud of his achievements in the last four years, adding that the people of Ewohimi wants him four another four years as their governor.

Speaking, shortly after commissioning the road project, Obaseki assured the people that he would exceed their expectations in his second term, stressing that he would also sustain the ongoing work on all the infrastructural projects across the state to improve the livelihood and engender sustainable development.

Ewohimi is the home town of the former first Lady of Edo State, late Mrs. Clara Oshiomhole.

During Obaseki’s campaign to Ohordua and Emu, the people were thrown into political frenzy when governor commissioned the Ohordua-Emu Bridge that had separated the two towns for a long time, as the collapse of the old bridge has prevented movement of vehicles from one town to the other.

Speaking when the campaign train visited his palace, the traditional ruler of Emu Kingdom, His Royal Highness, Promise Imhansiemhonjie honoured the governor and his deputy with chieftaincy titles in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the last four years.

Imhansiemhonjie offered special prayers for the governor and his deputy and assured them of the support of Emu people in the forthcoming election in September.

Emu, which is the home town of the State Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Tony Aziegbemhin, AbelNews learnt  knew no bounds as it was the first time the ward was blessed with such political icon in the person of Aziegbemhin as the Chairman of one of the biggest party in Africa, the PDP.

Speaking during the campaign visit, an elated PDP Chairman charged the people to vote enmass for the PDP and its candidates. He stated that apart from the bridge the Obaseki commissioned, he had also promised to restore the electricity in the ward. Recalled that the people have been in darkness for the past six years when electricity supply to the area collapsed.

To add glamour to the event, Chieftain of the APC, who decamped along with over 197 APC members to the PDP, said he had changed his name from Ehisota to Omonkiere, meaning the return of the baby.

He said he returned to his traditional home, the PDP while promising the governor of a 100 per cent victory in the unit and ward.

Speaking further Aziegbemhin disclosed to the people that the governor had graciously approved the appointment of their son, Prof. Tony Ogbebu, a Lecturer at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) as a commissioner in his cabinet.

According to him, the Professor has been screened by the House of Assembly and would be sworn-in soon.

In Oria, Ilushi and Ugboha, the reception was the same.

The people, who despite the scorching sun turned out in their hundreds to receive governor Obaseki and his campaign train.

In Ugboha, the PDP faithfuls came out bearing in mind that   their son Honourable Sergius Ogun, the re-incarnated and semblance of late Prof. Ambrose Alli, the man who had given meaning to the lives of the people in Esan land. Recalled that Serguis had taken a lot of children out of the streets by paying their school fees and registering them for the West Africa Examination Council(WAEC) examinations and National Examination Council(NECO).

With these in mind, presenting the governor and his deputy to the people as the preferred candidates was not a problem.

As the governor moved forward to speaking at the campaign ground, the shout of, “carry go. Na you be our governor. You don win” in Pidgin English rented the air.

Speaking, Obaseki promised to provide infrastructural facilities such as roads, bridges, electricity, schools among others for the people.

Recalled that Esan South East Local Government Area has always been a PDP stronghold except in some elections, when questionable results were allegedly manipulated and churned out by the former Governor of the state, Adams Oshiomhole in favour APC.

The ward to ward meeting with the people continues from Igueben, Uromi, Irrua, Ekpoma and the other parts of Esan land (Edo Central), where the governor is expected to garner 100 per cent votes in the September 19, 2020 governorship election in Edo State.
