Aftermath Of Confirmation; FAAN Heightens Coronavirus Screening At Lagos Airport

As Nigeria confirms its first victim of the Coronavirus, the Regional Manager, Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, Mrs Victoria Shinaba has stated the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria(FAAN) and officials of Port Health, a unit in the Ministry of Health have intensified screening at the airport to detect any case of the of the deadly disease.
This is just as the Regional Manager also disclosed that efforts are also in top gear to ascertain how the Italian went through screening procedures at the Lagos Airport.
“All screening facilities, thermal body and infra-red scanners had since been deployed since the outbreak of the covid19 for the screening of both inbound and outbound passengers”.
Speaking further, she stated that t FAAN was working with the relevant Port Health Unit personnel and other stakeholders nationwide on how to contain the measures.
In her words, “The authority was on top of the situation as it had escalated containment measures at airports nationwide. Concerned stakeholders; health officers, airlines and other secondary partners were all on red alert on the new development”.
She advised air travellers, airport users and the general public to acquaint themselves with the Ministry of Aviation, Health updates on the prevention; information posted at strategic areas at the airport as well their jingle on the virus for prevention purposes.
Recalled that the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi had confirmed that an Italian consultant with Larfarge Cement Company, Ewekoro, Ogun State in Lagos has tested positive to the COVID-19 Virus
Meanwhile, efforts are also on by FAAN and to get details on the index patient, Italian citizen, who flew into the country February 25, from Milan, Italy for a brief business transaction.
The Italian was said to have commenced his journey from Milan on February 24,2020, transited through Istanbul onboard a Turkish Airline and arrived in Lagos on Tuesday night.
He was said to have spent a night in yet to be identified hotel close to Lagos Airport.
