…As FAAN Urges Air Travellers, Airport Users To Submit Themselves For Routine Quarantine Checks

As part of efforts to prevent the spread of the deadly Corona Virus, which broke out in China, the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos has commenced screening of arriving passengers.

This is just as the airport authority advised air travelers and airport users to comply with all quarantine procedures and submit themselves for routine quarantine checks whenever they are asked to at the nation’s airports.

This advice was given by the Regional Manager, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), South West FAAN, Mrs. Victoria Shin Aba as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the disease.

She stated that already primary screening was ongoing and that temperature monitoring of all arriving passengers has commenced at Point of Entry (POE)

The Regional Manager also said that there is also enhanced visual observation for obvious signs of communicable disease.

Passengers with any of the following, she said are referred to secondary screening and these includes: fever -temperature above or equal to 38 degrees Celsius, Jaundice, skin rash and persistent diarrhea.

Others are persistent cough or difficulty in breathing, complains of headache, neck stiffness, decreased consciousness, lethargy, unexplained bleeding, persistent vomiting

She added that passengers with any of the above are referred for secondary screening, where the secondary screening form is used.

She added that if there is an obvious public health threat, the passenger is transferred to the designated hospital (Lagos State Mainland Hospital) following appropriate protocols (SOP) for further evaluation.

Shin-Aba said that passengers who are exposed may be in the incubation period (disease causing organism present in the body with no obvious symptom or sign) when they enter the country.

She added that collaboration and observance of basic Infection prevention and control measures by stakeholders is important and is being strengthened.

Explaining further the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority’s, Dr. Wilfred Haggai explained that the areas for enhanced surveillance are at the Point of Entry, on board the aircraft, at the Passenger Handling Service on the arrival queue, within the terminal building and within 400m radius of the POE.

Another area for surveillance, he said is outside the POE and that at the state and LGA Level, health facilities must be informed to always take travel history of patients and the state must do a lot of work with the health facilities.

No fewer than 17 people have died from a new Corona virus that has it origin in China.
