The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has informed airlines, passengers and the general public that a bush fire incident that occurred near the active area of the Port Harcourt International Airport (PHIA) Omagwa, forced the agency to temporarily close and re-open the airport for flight operations.
A statement issued by General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu had stated that as a result of the fire the authority has temporarily closed the runway of the airport to operations as part of safety precautions.
According to her, a joint team from FAAN and the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency(NAMA) evaluated the situation with a view to ensuring that the airside is cleared of smoke and restoration of normalcy at the airport.
Meanwhile, following a careful evaluation and mitigation of the impact of the bush fire earlier reported around the Port Harcourt International Airport and the dissipation of smokes around the airside, FAAN has re-opened the airport for operations.
Normal flight activities, the agency stated has re-commenced at the airport.
