Fmr. Nigeria Airways Workers Protest At Lagos Airport Over Unpaid N78B Entitlements

Workers of the moribund Nigeria Airways Limited(NAL) numbering about 500 yesterday embarked on a peaceful protest at Murtala Muhammed Airport(MMA)Lagos, over unpaid  entitlements put at over N78 billion.

The workers, some of whom are aged started assembling at the Skypower Catering Limited  opposite the Nigeria Air Force Base as early as .

At 8.00am the ex workers began the peaceful protest marching through the ever busy Airport Link Road to the General Aviation Terminal(GAT) also known as GAT and back while those who could not join their colleagues were advised to stay back at the Skypower Catering premises.

While protesting, the ex workers carried placards with different inscriptions such as “Pay us our entitlements estimated at N78 billion as our members are dying by the day, We deserve our entitlements because we have served our country,FG pay our entitlements ,we worked for it, Please  pay our severance benefits in full. We need our pay-off, not monthly pension and Mr President, we prayed for your recovery every Friday since May 2017″

The peaceful protest brought about vehicular traffic on the ever busy road but  the police from the Airport  Command was on hand to control traffic and also provide security for both the protesters and other road users, as they were stationed at strategic locations of the road.

Speaking to journalists,  the Chairman, Nigeria Airways Chapter of Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Mr Sam Nzene stated that it was unfortunate  and disheartening that the former workers of NAL were yet to receive their entitlements despite the fact that the President Muhammadu Buhari has given  approval to that effect

In his words, “We understand the funds are ready because bond was floated and the bond has since matured in June, but up till now, what we are saying is that nobody has called us for negotiations on the next line of action. “By now, we should be working with the unit that has been mandated to pay us, but up till now they are doing the payment in secret. “They do not want us to know. Even the aviation ministry is not so much in the know of what they are doing, so we want the President to please call those concerned to order.

He continued, “We are not seriously quarreling that  we have not been paid, but that the union should be aware of what they are doing, so that we can equally tell our members to remain calm that we will get our money.” According to him, the union has written several letters and made attempts to see the officers in the unidentified unit. “Since the approval came, nobody has told us what has been approved, but as long as we are concerned, our money is N78 billion; 5,909 workers and pensioners are to benefit.” recalled that the national carrier NAL was liquidated under questionable circumstances by the Chief Olusegun Obasanjo led administration in 2004 .
