Nigeria is to officially commence the export of yam to Europe today;Thursday, June 29, 2017.
This was made known to journalists by the the Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, shortly after yesterday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja.
Ogbeh informed that 72 tonnes will be exported in the first phase of the programme to the United Kingdom.
He explained that though today’s event is the formal take off of the yam exportaion programme,but that some tonnes of yam that were earlier exported arrived New York on June 16, 2017.
Relying on statistics from the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), the Agriculture Minister, stated that apart from the fact that Nigeria accounts for 61 per cent of total yam output in the world, the country’s yam is in demand all over the world.
In his words, “it is an embarrassment not to find Nigerian yam in those markets.We don’t even consume all the yam we produce, most go to wastage.”
