The Vice President of the International Federation of Aeronautical Information Management (IFAIMA), Alhaji Kabiru Yahaya Gusau has called on the Federal Government through the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to employ more personnel into the Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) to boost its operations.
He made the call while speaking at an event to mark the World Aeronautical Information Services (AIS) Day in Lagos.
Gusau said the organisation lacked adequate personnel as a result of ageing workforce in the system.
He noted that the shortage of personnel has created a lot of vacuum that needed to be filled to enable them meet the changes in the system, as it has transformed from Aeronautical Information Services (AIS) to Aeronautical Information Management (AIM)
Gusau also called for the licensing of personnel of AIS adding, that licensing them will enable them take responsibility of any action that would be traced to them while discharging their duties.
Gusau stated that AIS automation would laid to rest the issue of sending Notice To Airmen (NOTAM) by paper instead of doing it electronically, stressing that the Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria(TRACON) has greatly impacted on the airspace but expressed the hope that with automation on board, the issues associated with radio communications would be a thing of the past.
He appealed to the Federal Government to ensure the implementation of the AIS automation as it has been approved in the budget to ensure safer skies.
AIS is the backbone of Air traffic in Nigeria ensuring the takeoff and landing of aircraft and issues Notice To NOTAM and provides routing through chart for aircraft.
