Federal government today apologized to Nigerians for asking all account holders in the financial institutions to re-register.

The Federal Government had via its official twitter handle directed al account holders in financial institutions in the country to re-register and submit self certification forms to their respective banks.

The tweet reads, “This is to notify the general public that all account holders in Financial Institutions (Banks, Insurance Companies, etc) are required to obtain, complete and submit Self – Certification Forms to their respective Financial Institutions.”

The Federal Government decision to apologise to Nigerians is coming on the heels of the reactions the directive has generated.

Some Nigerians believe the directive is a waste of time considering the fact that the various financial institutions already have the BVN of every account holder.

To safe itself from further embarrassment, the government decided to tender an unreserved apology to Nigerians.

“We apologize for the misleading tweets (now deleted) that went up yesterday, regarding the completion of self-certification forms by Reportable Persons. The message contained in the FIRS Nigeria Notice does not apply to everybody. FIRS will issue appropriate clarification shortly”.

Notice does not apply to everybody. FIRS will issue appropriate clarification shortly”, FG clarified.
