The Directorate Human Resources and Administration (DHR&A) team of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has won the 4th edition of the Inter-Directorate Football Completion tagged ‘20019 FAAN Unity Cup’.
In the final match played yesterday at the football pitch of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) School, Ikeja, Lagos, DHR&A team piped the Directorate of Airport Operations (DAO) team 1.0 to bring the competition to a glorious end.
The only goal of the match by DHR& A was as result of defensive error on the part of DAO threw both the supporters of DHR & A and spectators into wide jubilation with scintillating music to celebrate the goal.
By emerging champions, of the 2019 FAAN Unity Competition, DHR&A team was given a giant trophy and FCMB N750, 000 cheque, DAO that came second smiled home with a cheque of N500, 000 and the third place got a cheque of N35, 000.
Medals and prize were also given to the players.
Earlier, FAAN has promised that it would consistently support of the agency to take part in sporting activities, as this would further boost their health status.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the competition, the Managing Director of FAAN, Capt. Hamisu Yadudu declared that the management would continue to sponsor the football competition, including other sporting activities in the country.
Yadudu stated that sport was very necessary for human development, adding that with sports, all the parts of human bodies would perform optimally.
Yadudu, who was represented by the Director of Finance &Account, Mrs Nike Aboderin commended the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for organising a successful tournament, adding that at a recent Public Service Games held in Bauchi State, FAAN football team defeated other teams from various public organisations to clinch the gold medal.
Aboderin, who did the ceremonial kick off of the final match , said, “The tournament has come to stay and I want to assure you that management will continue to give necessary support to this project within the confines of resources available at our disposal. FAAN will continue to promote and encourage our staff to engage in different sporting activities.
‘To all the teams that have participated in this tournament from the various directorates, I congratulate you all. Unfortunately, in tournaments like this, only a winner will emerge, but you all have done very well. I congratulate the winner of this tournament and I urge you to keep up the winning spirit and also embrace excellence in all aspects of your life.”
Speaking to journalists shortly after the first half of the final match between the Directorate of Human Resources & Administration (DHR&A) and Directorate of Airport Operations (DAO), the Chairman, Local Organising Committee (LOC) and General Manager, Welfare and Management Service, FAAN, Jimoh Sanni stated that the essence of the event was to instill unity among the staff of the organisation.
He stated that this year’s competition was the fourth edition and that the aim of the agency is to achieve unity, togetherness, fair play and ensure a healthy status.
The LOC Chairman said that the competition is fully sponsored by the management of FAAN and that the competition is going under a friendly atmosphere and that at the everybody is a winner.
According to him, “In this competition everybody is a winner. Everybody has a prize up to the seventh position. There will be trophies, Cash gifts and medals.”
On whether football players who played the final match are FAAN staff or mercenaries, the LOC Chairman stated that “they are all FAAN staff and that there is no room for mercenaries in the competiton , adding that the faces that people are not familiar with among the footballers are from outside stations.”
On the 2020 edition, he said that there would be many sports for the directorates to compete in such as football, lawn and table tennis, and others.
