Feelers reaching AbelNews desk says the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCo) Aviance is planning to lay off about 20 workers over health challenges.
The online platform further gathered they are to be laid off in an exercise called, ‘Staff Optimisation in NAHCo and that the ground handler decided to carry out the exercise following the decline in the productivity of some of these workers.
AbelNews also learnt while some of the workers who are affected developed these challenges while in active service for the company; others had personal health challenges that are hereditary.
Checks further revealed that the company in the course of carrying out job evaluation and proper placement of staff to address the poor productivity of some of its entire staff discovered that some of them had health challenges responsible for their shrinking productivity.
In swift reaction, the General Manager, Corporate Communications, NAHCo, Mr Tayo Ajakaiye, who spoke to AbelNews on phone, confirmed that discussion was on ongoing on the issue.
He stated that the meeting that was held last week with the unions was part of efforts at resolving the issues in accordance with labour laws of the country.
The spokesman added that as law abiding entity, NAHCo will resolve the issue amicably, as the organisation will still meet with the unions on the issue.
AbelNews learnt that to prevent industrial dispute with unions in the industry, which will be the result of the sack, NAHCo was said to have on Thursday last week parleyed with the leadership of the two leading unions; the Air Transport Service Senior Staff Association of Nigeria(ATSSSAN) and the National Union of Air transport Employees(NUATE).
The unions at the meeting was said to have told NAHCo to act in line with the provisions of Nigeria Labour Act on disengagement of workers and medical evaluation of workers to guide against unnecessary job loss.
AbelNews learnt that while some (especially the baggage handlers) are willing to go provided they are paid all their entitlements; other workers are not comfortable for fear of the unknown.
Be that as it may, AbelNews learnt that, the exercise will commence after all the issues regarding the disengagement of workers have been resolved with the unions.
However, a source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said, “Soon, the management would embark on purging of staff in NAHCo due to ill-health, which has been discovered in some of the workers. The management observed that some of the workers were not productive optimally and decided to embark on staff optimisation. It was in the cause of this that some staff were discovered to have health challenges.”
“The number of those to be laid off are not known yet, but I think over 20 of our staff would be affected, but in order to ensure just and equitable manner and the unions and the management are to evaluate the situation and proffer a win-win solution to both parties.
